Overlooking the James

The historic tobacco plantations in the Richmond Virginia area were built along the James River, not only for the beauty of the setting but also because the river provided transportation for the cash crop. On our tour of Wilton House yesterday, we had a chance to walk to the end of the back lawn and see the river in full spate from Spring rain. Because the leaves have not yet appeared on the trees, we got a good view of the river and the train track that provided a different form of transportation many years after the glory days of the plantations.
