This young man proudly selected his character and his costume for the American Mosaic which I featured yesterday: http://365project.org/allie912/365/2016-03-19 Frederick Douglass was an African-American social reformer, abolitionist, orator, writer, and statesman. After escaping from slavery in Maryland, he became a national leader of the abolitionist movement from Massachusetts and New York, gaining note for his dazzling oratory and incisive antislavery writings.
Douglass was a firm believer in the equality of all peoples, whether black, female, Native American, or recent immigrant. He was also a believer in dialogue and in making alliances across racial and ideological divides, and in the liberal values of the American Constitution.
We need more of his persuasion in this political climate.
Nice presentation of Douglass and the student. I agree about Douglass' values being needed in today's world! Hopefully by studying him, these students will be better citizens as adults. Which, I think, is one of the goals of teaching history. . .?
Sounds and looks like he did an excellent job on his report. I do think many people have these sentiments. Unfortunately they are not the ones who make the news.
