The glaciers came south into New England eons ago and left the soil strewn with rocks. The settlers in turn gathered the rubble and made elegant boundaries with the stones. I'm not sure if this wall that Jack is examining dates back to the colonial period but it certainly brings those structures to mind.

You could be in Lancashire or Yorkshire in this photo Alison, beautiful dry stone wall. I had no idea they were in any other country but the UK.
