Meet Mr. and Mrs. Verlander who have come to speak to all the First Grade classes at Collegiate. They have written a children’s book, The Shelter Gang and Their Secret Adventure, a story that encourages readers to adopt rescue dogs. The story has a baseball theme, which isn’t surprising since the Verlanders are the parents of Major League Baseball pitching ace, Justin Verlander. First Graders take a field trip to the SPCA and learn all about caring for pets, and the Verlanders have been active volunteers with the local animal shelter. In fact, they have helped raise $1.5 million to build a brand new and much bigger shelter in their local county of Goochland. It is a match made in Heaven!
