I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you. Very truly I tell you, no servant is greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him.
John 13:15-16
We have a lovely tradition at our church on Maundy Thursday. We are served a delicious dinner by members of the session, which is what the governing body is called in the Presbyterian Church. Before we are seated we symbolically wash and dry each others hands as Jesus washed his disciples' feet. Then, after dinner, we have communion at the table. All these activities help bring to life the events of Holy Week, as we turn our minds to the most significant time in the Christian year.
I enjoy hearing about the different gatherings which churches hold during Passion Week. This sounds like a deeply meaningful and humbling experience for your congregation. A foot washing ceremony is so powerful. May God bless you all as you contemplate Christ's sacrifice and celebrate His resurrection.
That's a lovely tradition. During Holy Week we gather in one of three churches (Methodist, Anglican or Presbyterian) for a service every evening. This year we're in the Presbyterian Church ... had communion last night. Tonight is Tenebrae.
