Faberge Revealed

Another spectacular show at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts. The studio of Karl Faberge created unique pieces for the rulers of Imperial Russia. Here is an introduction from the VMFA website:

The exhibition, Fabergé Revealed, includes works from four collections in America, totaling more than 500 objects. It will be at VMFA July 9 – October 2. The Russian jeweler Karl Fabergé, arguably the most famous jeweler of all time, crafted objects for the families of the last two tsars of Russia and for most of Europe’s nobility. He is best known for his Imperial Easter eggs.

VMFA’s collection is the largest public collection of Fabergé in this country and includes five Russian Imperial Easter eggs. Only 50 were created by this world-renowned jeweler. Most Fabergé works are made from gold, platinum, diamonds and rubies, among other precious metals and gemstones.
I really liked the miniatures like the French bulldog and the rooster. The lady working in the giftshop was wearing a tiara because of the beautiful tiaras created by Faberge.

There is one forgery here Can you guess? When you are ready to test your art forgery detection ability, here is the fake: http://tinyurl.com/3myo8ns
Hmmm....is the first egg in the top left hand corner? Beautiful collage!

I am going to guess it would be the tiara. I would not think they would want to have it tainted by hair sprayand other residues

Don't know! Great collage though

Nice collage- now I'm assuming that the lady in the gift shop is not part of the forgery question because its reasonable to assume she would not be allowed to wear one of Faberge's taira around (insurance issues galore!). So for me it's a toss up between the upper right hand corner (seems to be a rather large piece which is not typical of his other pieces OR the little vase with the holy in it. Just doesn't seem like the style of the other pieces. But I'd be hard pressed to choose one or the other without seeing them more closely. After all most forgeries are supposed to be hard to discern! Great job in presenting the overall show, historical background and artwork.

Allison , it has to be the lady in the gift shop who is wearing the fake / forgery . Having said that , it does seen rather too obvious !!

The holly just above the lady looks 'un-faberge' like ....I would say the holly was just an ornament in the museum...perhaps in the cafe or restaurant.

You've obviously put a lot of hard work, care and attention into this image, so thanks for all that . It's a super image to share with us.

BTW: The lady in the gift shop looks very elegant, very regal and very beautiful. The tiara really suits her :)
