Another picture from our visit to James Madison's mountain home. This dignified lion is one of a pair set along the path in Madison's walled garden. (I guess I could have titled this picture "Guardin' the Garden") I don't know if he has been there since the days of Madison or was added when William Dupont bought the property in the early 20th century or was part of the most recent garden restoration provided by The Garden Club of Virginia. His soulful gaze suggests he has seen many things over the years and will continue to keep watch for many more.
Wonderful statue. He seems to be in pretty good shape for a fellow his age- but I'm sure the weather is kinder to statues in Va. than it is in the north!
