The day began with a math competition for Fourth graders, This is the second year our school has held a Tournament 24. The rules are simple: Make the number 24 from the four numbers on a game card. You can add, subtract, multiply and divide. Use all four numbers on the card, but use each number only once. You do not have to use all four operations. All number nines will have a red center, so you can tell a nine from a six.
It sounds easy but when I entered the cafeteria, there was dead silence while those still in competition studied their cards and the audience watched silently. It is great not just for computational skills but for developing the ability to think ahead. To read more about this program, follow this link: http://www.24game.com/
