I suspec t they'll take a pass...unless they're quite thirsty! (We stayed in a B&B in Chicago one recent winter and the owners had a pond with running water that they kept warmed so it wouldn't freeze! I thought that was fabulous as birds, small wildlife and deer used it.)

ahh you should ensure they have water in icy conditions Allison , Jane would be nipping out with a kettle to melt the ice and allow the birds some fresh water :)
