There is something primeval about mud; it is a sensuous element that sucks you into the past. One of my all-time favourite songs is The Hippopotamus Song by Flanders & Swan with its glorious line "Mud, mud glorious mud nothing quite like it for cooling the blood". Mud is glorious and wonderful to walk and play in, just watch a group of children in a path like this!
