250 days into my year long making of a daily still life. Mary challenged me to "make a still life that incorporates all four elements of earth, air, fire, and water". I immediately thought of Japanese gardens, did some research and was inspired to make this. The rock and slates = earth, the bird = air, the candle = fire, and the flower in the glass of water = water.
@mcsiegle Mary, I really enjoyed this one, very challenging, especially the "air" element then I thought of using a bird whose natural element is air. I hope you like the result and thank you for the great challenge.
@30pics4jackiesdiamond It is a matter of practicalities, unfortunately I don't have anything of a sufficient height, depth and width to hang the background cloth on to be able to accommodate a low angle shot except a wicker armchair. It innevitably means room background gets included. But thanks for the advice.
@30pics4jackiesdiamond After I wrote the above I opened a book I am reading and these words assailed me:
"Anyone looking to stimulate their own creativity should avoid too strict structures
Always question and, when needed change long-standing habits.” (Inspiration Leica Alademie p. 99). I shall take this advice and look for alternatives to my normal backdrop structure. The Serendipity Angel seems to have visited!
Yes, I do see the placement of the rock and pieces of slate as very reminiscent of Japanese gardens. And I like the interplay of elements in the glass of water with the flower. Is there also one of the slate pieces in the glass? Air is a difficult element to show in and of itself. Great idea to use the bird! Mission accomplished.
