This was a concept shot I wanted to do last week for the new beginnings theme, but couldn't due to bad weather. Not about to do this in the rain. So today it was sunny and I gave it a go.
I modeled this after the famous painting "Chrisina's World." Here is the link if you don't know it: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christina's_World I thought I could show my desperation with my littlest leaving for school. I am really so ok with it, but just thought that this could be cool to represent some of my feelings and difficulties with my new normal.
Speaking of school, check out the fun pencil story at Mad Hatters this week: @madhatters and play along with your own pencil tales and shots: madhatters-pencil .
@snackmaster This is two shots layered. Last year I so did that, though, I jumped up in the air as my kids were getting on the bus and did selfies. Total idiot thing to do. So I learned this time around.:)
brilliantly done............like @snackmaster I thought the kids would think you were crazzzzzzzzzzzzy, but a layered shot explains it........as ever you are so creative.
Oh my! You are so clever and thoughtful. Did you set the camera on a tripod, lie down and wait for the bus? Did anyone know what you were doing? I think you may be a little mad. Full of wonderful self confidence though! Fav!
Wonderful! What did your kids thinking about this one?? I'm a bad mom... I'd be jumping up and down for joy! Our teachers are on strike (still) and it doesn't look like we will be starting on September 2nd.
@kwind Oh poo, that stinks. I did this in two shots. One while she was getting on the bus and the selfie after she had left. Last year I did the jumping in front of the entire bus of kids and bus stop of parents thing (it was a jumping for joy), but learned how dumb it feels. this way I could take my time with the selfie, too. I'm happy about her going, but it is certainly bittersweet as she is my last and I have no one home with me full time anymore. Today was nice. this week starts the first full week back. Hope the strike ends soon!!!
@lleo 2 shots. that way I wasn't quite so mad. I did the madness last year and felt like an idiot. Thanks so much, lady!!!
For your kids sakes I'm glad this was two shots but you have done it so well you would never believe it, especially with the kids staring out of the window!
@summerfield I've done them before...not a whole bunch. Did it with this weeks and other Hatter shots. Usually, I just don't want to spend the time, but sometimes you need layers:). Harder to do this time, like it was the first. Thanks!!
you are hysterically funny - this was such a fun shot. LOL I would love to have been a mouse in that bus to hear the kids wondering what the heck you were up to. Fun, Amanda ;)
Great concept & edit.I don't know layers. I suspect it would have been easier to do with Gimp, the way I did my most recent multiplicity shot. Just open (in your case) photos. Paste the one of you in the original, invert and hit the delete key
@summerfield@bill_fe I did use Gimp. Before I used another version which was easier. I finally figured out how to erase and let the background show through...that was the challenge. Just do searches online for explanations...it's not too tough.
Knew this one was yours and interesting to read the thread. Smart to do layers here -- poor kid being labeled with crazy mom wouldn't do! It's poignant and well composed and just great!
What an amazing shot, Amanda. Love how you are posed and caught her getting on the bus. You are really good at this, telling a story with your photo. FAV
I was thinking the same thing @snackmaster was! haha! Great idea to layer two shots! I am sure your daughter greatly appreciates this too! ;-) Very creative shot! Nicely done!
Wonderful shot and concept Amanda. I was thinking the same as others, I'm glad to read how you did it. I can't imagine how last year went for you though! I have one more year with my youngest and home and I'm so looking forward to it. But I'm in the same shoes as @kwind with the teachers strike that some are saying might go until Dec. Totally crazy politics going on, and this dispute has been unresolved for years. Our kids are certainly having a looong summer holiday this year.
brilliant idea and works very well. i hate it when we return to school. school runs, lunchboxes, homework rows.... could happily do school holidays all year!
@linnypinny 2 shots, layered. Last year I tried to time a bus stop shot and just felt like an absolute idiot in front of all those people...a bus full of kids, the driver and the parents there. I was jumping up and down in front of the camera like a total dork. This time I snapped a bunch as she was getting on and went back with my tripod and remote and captured myself...and then layered them in Gimp. It came out pretty well, I thought. Can't see that it is separate shots. Glad you could see what I was doing, recognized the inspiration. Thank you!!!
Haha, I'm so glad it was two shots... We don't want the driver calling 911 because some lady looks like she's had a stroke ;) so creative and a fav of course!
wow.....another fav I definitely feel for you! She had orientation the day I took my photo's we don't start for a few days so I will take some more then. I work at the HS and start the day before her:(
Great shot, I am very familiar with Christina's world as the Wyeth family has a strong connection to Maine and of course the picture is painted in Maine.
I saw this: http://www.msn.com/en-us/lifestyle/family/moms-photobomb-first-day-of-school-photos/ss-AAeJmAB
And I thought of your photo above and how much more original and loving it is. I don't know if I've told you this or not, but when I (the youngest) started kindergarten, someone asked my mother what she was going to do in an empty house. Her reply? "Take a bath without an audience."

This is the tutorial I used:
