American Goth Chick by alophoto

American Goth Chick

It all started with a pitchfork and an idea was born. Just a thought and then it took root and started to grow into another wild Amanda selfie.

Our friend has this great pitchfork...I know people with the coolest stuff! And I thought, I've got to use that for a selfie somehow. My mind jumped to the famous painting American Gothic by Grant Wood https://www.google.com/culturalinstitute/asset-viewer/american-gothic/5QEPm0jCc183Aw?utm_source=google&utm_medium=kp&hl=en&projectId=art-project

I needed a spin on it and this is what I came up with. Me all Gothic, a goth chick.

The hardest part was putting together a gothic outfit with my midwestern suburban housewife wardrobe. I just layered on the black stuff, got some black lipstick and nail polish on the Halloween isle, borrowed the pitchfork and went to a local deserted mansion.

As I was walking out the door, though, I glanced in a full length mirror and thought "Oh geesh, I look like a dominatrix!" and then I felt self conscious driving across town looking like that. Luckily, I didn't see many when I was out shooting, but when I did, I just kept my eyes down and focused on the task of being a pitchfork wielding Goth Chick. And I figured if anyone tried to mess with me, I had a pretty good weapon on my side.

Nailed it!

oh Amanda - you always intrigue me and make me smile - a pitch fork of all things hahahahah and a local deserted mansion - superb
October 9th, 2014
Haha, this is awesome! You do such great selfies Amanda!
October 9th, 2014
That is good!
October 9th, 2014
LOL - love this one! The barn shot is cool also, but I think your expression in this one just nails it! A big goth fan fav for me!
October 9th, 2014
@linnypinny That's what Mike said here...expression was spot on. Thank you. And here I thought I looked weird:).
October 9th, 2014
Your selfies are the best! I like this too but prefer the other version, here I think the house behind you draws the attention from you
October 9th, 2014
I immediately thought of that painting when I saw your pic :) (That, and Rocky Horror, which that painting always reminds me of too!)
October 9th, 2014
LOL - I like this one too. Your neighbors must get such a kick out of you - can just imagine them peeking from behind curtains beckoning to each other - look she's out there again :)
October 9th, 2014
@vega Truly! I did some real nutso stuff last year and was caught. This year I was out front in a pink bunny suit. This one was far from home. The neighbors moved away actually. Maybe I was too much for them.
October 9th, 2014
Awesome portrait
October 9th, 2014
This is awesome my friend. Such a dour look on your face! I believe it was the Addams family. So very cool to find a mansion and get the use of a pitchfork.
October 9th, 2014
This one has a scarier feel to me. Nice one!
October 9th, 2014
Ha....cool house too!!
October 9th, 2014
Haha, brilliant - very well done!
October 9th, 2014
@bill_fe I need my very own pitchfork. I mean who doesn't?! Thanks, Bill!!! The lighting was so hard with the shadows and brightness. I eventually set the camera to auto...gave up.
October 9th, 2014
Amanda has anyone ever told you that you resemble Jenna Wolfe on the Today Show?
October 9th, 2014
@eyesmile No never have heard that. I'll look her up now. Hope she's not funky looking;-).
October 9th, 2014
Well you do look very goth! One day you should make it to Whitby for the goth weekend.
October 9th, 2014
Ha ha Amanda you really make me smile. Not sure I actually know anyone who owns a pitchfork I could borrow!
October 9th, 2014
@paulaw You may be surprised. Earlier in the year, I needed a pickax for a selfie, asked my neighbor and he had one. Who has stuff like this?! Thanks!
October 9th, 2014
Meg
The shots turned out great! I applaud your bravery. I am so chicken to take shots in public. I usually kick the dust and feel all ashamed if someone catches me. Hahaha!
October 9th, 2014
Lol!!Super capture:-)
October 9th, 2014
@megstorey This time I was pretty embarrassed as I looked so unlike myself. Thanks, Meg. I do like not getting caught, though better stories come from those times:).
October 9th, 2014
You look pretty small next to that big pitchfork! wonderful shot! fav
October 9th, 2014
@lynnz I know...the farmer in the painting is much bigger than me...the pitchfork was in front of him. Oh well:). Thanks!!!
October 9th, 2014
That's great! Very creative, as always, to think of this! I like this one the best Totally makes me think of the painting! Fav!!!
October 9th, 2014
This doesn't look like you at all, so angry looking! I think you need your smile back :o) xx
October 9th, 2014
Wow, your title was the first thing I thought when I saw your pic. Eeerie!
October 9th, 2014
@soboy5 Glad I nailed it then! Thanks! Don't I look like that Addams family girl?
October 9th, 2014
This is not you - why did you dress your daughter up like this? The severe expression is missing too!
October 9th, 2014
@maggiemae Totally me. I can look really young, much younger than I am. My oldest daughter is only 8:).
October 9th, 2014
Not sure I would want to meet you on a dark night. Can't wait to see what you have planned for Halloween itself
October 9th, 2014
Great light, shadows, composition and fabulous selfie. Fav
October 9th, 2014
@scarybird I am safe and sane, just not one to be screwed with:). Who knows what I will do, probably nothing, yet hubby wants to make me a costume.
October 9th, 2014
ready for Halloween !
October 10th, 2014
you didn't dress up mike for this? haha! did you have to buy those really dark lipstick to get your goth look? you look like a rebel here but not gothic. wonderful, kiddo!
October 10th, 2014
@summerfield A gothic friend, that I didn't realize was goth, told me I should have borrowed stuff from her. Yep, this was the best I could do with what I had. I bought the lipstick and nail polish.
October 10th, 2014
You are priceless and love your dedication! How can this house be deserted, it looks stunning! Love it and fav
October 10th, 2014
OK, so I love the background in the other one, but this fits the AG so much better, probably because you have a more demented/disturbed look about you!! The other one could be a poster for a cool club, like the Limelight in NYC that used to be in a building that had been a church!!
October 10th, 2014
I love this photo, Amanda. All that is missing is your husband. FAV
October 11th, 2014
I did a shovel shot like this and no, you look nought like a dominatrix.
October 11th, 2014
@bobfoto That's right, end of first year, right? I looked like a very conservative and lumpy one perhaps (moreso with hat and spiked bracelet from other barn version?). My goth friend here told me I didn't look goth, but I just went with what I had. I should have borrowed stuff from her. Hey, tag me if you think to with your last shot so I don't miss your goodbye/see off party. Regardless of how I looked or what i looked like here, I was uncomfortable in public.
October 11th, 2014
@amandal - it is interesting to note the difference in WB between this shot and the one of you in front of the black barn. Subtle differences in your skin tone and lipstick colouration. I agree, the hat and bracelet version does look a little more "attitude" than this one.
October 11th, 2014
@bobfoto the light was very dappled in front of the house, and super bright here. Hard to get the lighting right. House shots were last, so the lipstick may have faded. I just had some training/lessons with a professional and learned M settings more. But yet seem to have more trouble knowing a bit more than I had before. The last shots were shot in Auto. I gave up with the hard lighting.
October 11th, 2014
@amandal - you use a remote, right?
October 11th, 2014
@bobfoto You know, I tried and it wouldn't work here. I was doing the 10 second run thing. Sometimes in the bright light or with a certain distance, the remote doesn't work. I've also found it tough to get into position and lose the remote in the 2 seconds the darn thing gives me. I need 5 or 10 seconds sometimes. Had a hell of a time with that with another shoot this week.
October 11th, 2014
@amandal - Hmmm tricky shot indeed...
October 11th, 2014
@bobfoto It made for a funny story last year, this time not so much.
October 11th, 2014
@bobfoto Are Aussie and Kiwi accents similar? Last night, we watched a video with a man from New Zealand narrating and I wrongly guessed he was Australian. Is that like asking if Chicagoans and New Yorkers sound the same?
October 11th, 2014
@amandal - We should let someone from the other side of the ditch explain.... http://youtu.be/zs_rXxi0zhM
October 12th, 2014
@bobfoto Ditch, pond, tracks...ok.
October 12th, 2014
@bobfoto LOVE them...hilarious. Business time was one of my all time faves. I sing that to my kids, edited of course.
October 12th, 2014
@amandal - there's a great friendly rivalry between us and the Kiwis.
October 12th, 2014
@bobfoto Ok.

@bobfoto Ok again:). Got it this time.
October 12th, 2014
Hahaha. I love this. So awesome.
October 12th, 2014
@amandal - woah! Double posting... sorry 'bout that.
October 13th, 2014
@bobfoto I've done it before. Smartphones can be dumb. I don't even have one.
October 13th, 2014
@bobfoto P.S. Didn't realize you knew the 's' word.>:)) That's an evil grin.
October 13th, 2014
@edie Thanks, sweet friend!!!
October 13th, 2014
@darsphotos I didn't even think to include him. It's honestly just easier to do things on my own, like this anyway. He grumbles at my photos often so I do these on my own time. Maybe sometime I will do a redo:).
October 13th, 2014
I have always loved that painting without knowing what it was called!! You have educated me! Fav for you my (old) friend. Old as in long standing ;-)
October 13th, 2014
@seanoneill Funny how old can mean many different things...old as in age, as in longstanding and as in former. Maybe even more things. Glad to give you some education. I've seen it before in Chicago. It's now at our local art museum and I should go in and see it again. So appreciate the kind fav, my very young friend. Hope all is well with you and your family. Love to you all.
October 13th, 2014
@amandal we're all great thanks, life is how I like it, hectic!! Ben's news last week has me on cloud 9!!
October 13th, 2014
@seanoneill Missed the news. Is it on your project? He's doing well then. So good. Glad that life is well and busy. Ours, too.
October 13th, 2014
@amandal yes, he's amazing. My shot from oct 8th tells all. I'll spend a while over on your project tomorrow with a cuppa :-) love to you and yours X
October 13th, 2014
You are my Bones !!
October 14th, 2014
@httpgeffed Here you go. I didn't get the hubby involved as I changed the title to American Goth Chick.
January 8th, 2015
LOL this one is great, but you should get hubby too!
