Soldiers Swap Stories Like Old Friends by alophoto

Soldiers Swap Stories Like Old Friends

I always waffle between b&w and color...let me know your preference with this would you? Color here: http://365project.org/amandal/themes-challeng/2015-06-22

Yesterday we attended an airshow at a local airport. It was AWESOME!

Not only did we get to see some amazing planes flying overhead, but we had a special pavilion for Michael's work team, a catered lunch, great seats for the show, and we also got to tour some planes on the ground. A super fun day and event.

I took more photos on one day than I remember taking before (or at least hugely more than normal). Over 500. Bogged down in sorting them now. Only just made a dent.

But this was the shot that I was more excited about. This poignant moment between soldiers. Soldiers swapping their tales, sharing a bond that I could never understand as a civilian. A beautiful moment. Life is full of these moments. I always feel blessed to witness them, and even better when I have a camera to capture it.
I really like the b&w. It has a "one moment in time" feel to it

Love it in b&w

@annied All this talk about waffles and I want some for breakfast. Hmmmm...:)

@amandal haha 11pm here but waffles does sound good :)

Definitely prefer the B&W. I think the color distracts from the story here.

I prefer the b&w version... it makes the subject feel more timeless. What a lovely moment you have captured.

Great image - I also prefer the mono shot.

Fantastic shot.

Beautiful

Black and white is my favourite for this, but I totally understand your dilemma! I do the same. Lovely image, by the way!

I like the color version better.

Great candid, Amanda! Have not seen the color one yet. I do like this processing.

Technically, the one "soldier" is an airman, but the wheelchair does appear to have an Army symbol on it. The sentiment is still the same, though. Service members swapping stories. Fabulous shot. I am normally a color gal, but I think I like this one better in B&W. Gives it some history.

I think the colour one indicates the weather but the monochrome indicates the people more strongly!

Poignant shot, all the better for being B&W. My few 'best mates' go back to a shared experience over 40 years ago. Fav

I like the colored one best, but then I tend towards color more anyway!! It's always awesome to see soldier to soldier talking together, no matter what branch they come from!! It's stories only they can relate to and it makes me sad that only they can understand them!! This is a fantastic and moving photo Amanda!! FAV!

I think I'm on team waffle, sorry! Good eye though, nicely seen and captured x

Color takes away from the soldiers I think, agree with Maggiemae. I didn't even notice that other plane in the background till I saw the color slide . I think it really draws your eye away from the men.

@lesip I felt like the color wasn't amazing and didn't really add anything but distraction...so good. I think people are drawn about it, though. Oh well.:)

@carla42 I like waffles. Go Team Waffles! Thanks!

@tonydebont Love that Tony! So glad it was meaningful to you!

@cashew Really appreciate your kind comments!

Yes, poignant is certainly the right way to describe it. And I think it has a more powerful feel in b&w. It is more than simply a snapshot in that version -- it conveys a timeless story.

The B&W version gets my thumbs-up. Sans color, it's bold, straight to the point, all about the soldiers. Great capture, Amanda. Glad you're going to share lots more pictures from this day.

Such a great moment captured. I really like the black and white. The tones work so well with the mood.

I'm like Shrek's donkey and love waffles!

@skipt07 And in the morning, I'm making waffles. We had them this morning actually. YUM!!!
June 24th, 2015
Oh yes, I was going to answer your question. I prefer the b/w. While both are good, to me with the color some of the background colors tend to pull my eye away from the two men talking.

@amandal - What time should I be there? We were supposed to have an air show at the Air Base at Youngstown this year. I don't know what happened other than the cuts to the defence budget.

Great capture!! I bet they have some stories to tell!! Is this a nationwide thing? I think they had an airshow in San Diego last weekend, too! As a matter of fact, I decided to purchase my Tamron lens after I attended a lecture about how to shoot aircraft for the show, and they were planning all these photo get togethers for the event.
