The Ghost Ship by alophoto

The Ghost Ship

I always feel slightly foggy after a vacation. Nearly normal again, but still a part of me is on island time.

So, this was an annoying thing that happened to my lens several times (a handful or so) during the trip. I'd leave the air conditioned boat, step out into the hot humid air and my lens would fog up. I'd wipe and wipe and dismantle and wipe to no avail.

This is one such shot, but I rather liked the ghostly effect of the fake, lens fogged up fog.

Any suggestions as to how to handle this, as it was rather annoying and I missed some good shots? I want to be prepared the next time I'm in the islands.
Funny that you mention this because it happened to me this morning. I have a bulb squeeze blower that I carry in my bag. It's really for blowing off lint but I used it to clear the lens of moisture which it did within a minute or two.

Still love the effect!

Well, I can't help you with the suggestion you're asking for, but I really like this foggy lens shot. :)

One way to achieve a foggy shot - I don't have the hot and humid exercise to deal with though. Its more cold and icy which fogs my glasses up! Same effect!

Your title is perfect! I'm no expert on anything related to humidity!

You could try keeping the camera in a large zip lock bag (Hefty 2 Gallon) and leave it in the bag for a while before taking it out for photographs.

Oh, I do like the fake fog. I posted one a few days ago. http://365project.org/bill_fe/365/2015-08-11

Love the fake fog effect. The only way I know to prevent humidity condensing on the cold lens is to take the camera into the open for 10 to 15 minutes to acclimatise.

Great shot...you put the fake fog to good use

@tonydebont @joemuli There were times I had it out for a good long while...more than 10-15 minutes and it was still foggy. Made me a little crazy. Wanted to fling my camera from the ship;-).

Frustrating, but it worked well for this shot!

I like it - such a happy accident, Amanda. In the old days photographers would try many tricks to get similar effects. For example, smearing the lens with petroleum jelly.

Love the hazy fog- cool capture!

@yrhenwr Can't imagine how hard it would get to clean up the lens after doing that!

surely it is so mysterious....

@amandal Thought of another possible solution, warm up the camera with the hair-dryer before you leave the cabin. Should work.

Don't use the air conditioner ;p. Srsly... I don't recall having this issue when we were in Europe last summer in 35 C weather and that's prolly why... I can only take so much AC and would generally turn it down or off...

PS - I really like the effect here... Maybe if I'd known I could get this effect I wouldn't have fought w my hubby so much over the AC!

Cool shot!

@northy It's damn hot and sticky down there...you need the ac. I guess we are hotter down south, too:). It was soooo annoying not to have my camera ready when I needed it.

I knew exactly what had happened when I saw the image -- and I do like it! I've had it happen, to, and I have no idea what to do with the camera or my glasses.

This is so annoying..... I could have sworn that I had commented on this post with a link that I had found on this very subject.....:-((( Just in case you are still interested here it is: http://digital-photography-school.com/tips-for-avoiding-a-foggy-lens/
BTW, I love the effect you got here, even if it wasn't what you actually saw!
