On the square

The Old Bridge Inn in Ripponden is over 700 years old. This door may not be...quite...square but goodness, it's stood the test of time!
I love the aged wood and the stone step up to the door. Is there a story behind the metal medallions nailed to the beam?

Beautiful old doorway. Lots of little dings in it which must all have a story to tell.

The stone step looks fantastic too. Nothing as old as this in Australia. I miss old things sometimes!!

@gardencat I think they're "horse brasses" that would normally be tacked to the yoke around shire horses when they delivered barrels of beer on carts. This door will remember those days!

@onewing The first time we visited family in Australia when I was 10, we had a half day trip to be taken to the oldest house in the area. 150 years old- we at the time lived in a rather run of the mill British 200 year old home!

Lovely. It has gorgeous character and I could imagine what it would look like if you replaced it with something from Homebase or B&Q - just horrible!

And look at that worn step! I bet that place could tell some wonderful stories!

Would love to sit there in the winter with a nice glass of Rioja and a roaring fire. Beautiful aged wood, it has such character.
