This is what the lakeshore looks like now. The hills you see are frozen water, and out beyond them you can see more ice ridges and frozen lake. The sandy beach is covered with deep snow. We walked on frozen Lake Michigan. The Great Lakes are the largest freshwater lakes on the planet, and they are 91% frozen right now because of the extreme weather.
Wow - I'm so glad you posted this. It's a fantastic view of what the Lake looks like now. Really hard to believe if you didn't see it. At first I thought I was looking at waves - until I read your write-up. Just amazing.
It looks soooo cold!! I grew up in the Chicago area so I know how cold it gets. I love how the hills of frozen water look in the photo and the fence. The clouds are pretty too! Great photo!!
Yes...ice volcanoes! Great shot - thanks for posting. I saw this on the New Faces page and thought it was at Sandbanks beach on the Canadian side of Lake Ontario. Looks exactly the same. Being a Brit living in Canada I'm fascinated by these...so far I've spent two days at Presqu'ile with my camera. Their website has a good description of the formation if you're interested: http://www.parkreports.com/parksblog/?p=4822

@vfox That is very interesting. I did not know what they were called. Someone I met on the beach told me they were "frozen waves" and I'm sure that is not correct (although poetic.) I know it has been tough for many people, but it's really been a beautiful winter visually.
