I don't see American Black Ducks all that often around here, so when I saw this pair yesterday while birding on the Kalamazoo River I started to follow them along the riverbank to try to get some good shots of them. I was pretty surprised, to say the least, when their heads started bobbing in unison and one started pushing the other under water with its bill. Having seen two Mute Swans breed when I was birding last spring, I recognized what was going on. I guess spring really is coming, although I was knee deep in snow taking this picture.
