It was very windy, and the wind was whipping his feathers around, obscuring some of his markings. He was going way into that tree, to where only the tip of his tail was sticking out. I wonder if he was excavating a nest. Not sure. Thanks for your comment!
@milaniet They are about 2 inches larger than a Downy. I usually go by the size of the bill. If the bill is as long as the head, then it's a Hairy. If the bill is only half the size of the head, then a Downy. But that can be hard to judge in the field also. Thanks for your comment.
