Northern Birding

I spent the weekend birding up near Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan. It was bitterly cold, but very worthwhile. Here some birders are waiting to see if a rare bird seen recently feeding in the tree on the right might show up, while the morning sun rises behind the clouds. There is a frozen river in the distance. The bird did not appear.
Bummer you had to freeze your buns off for nothing :) How do you protect your camera when it's bitterly cold. It's been below zero here and I don't have an expensive camera and just worried the cold would ruin it somehow :(

@not_left_handed My camera mostly performed very well in the extreme cold. Average temp. was about 10 below zero (fahrenheit). I was only outside for 10-15 minutes at a time, then back in the car where me and the camera both warmed up. However, I did have some problems with being able to see thru the viewfinder. I think my breath was fogging it up. And I had to stop taking pictures much sooner than I would have if the weather had been warmer, so I could not maximize the opportunities I had.

your temps are about the same as ours --- we were at -26° C this morning. was the missing bird the pine grosbeak you posted later?

@sunnygreenwood It was a Townsend's Solitaire that has been seen there the past few weeks. Thanks for asking.

Really like that orb in the sky struggling to shine

That REALLY captures the feel of being out there in the cold and the anticipation of finding some good bird sitings.
