Whooping Cranes, Texas

Many birders go to south Texas to see the rare, wintering Whooping Cranes near Rockport. To get good views, you need to take a boat tour. You will see that these cranes are banded. They are from the flock that breeds in Alberta, Canada and winters in Texas. There are about 450 Whooping Cranes in the wild now, up from only 21 birds in 1941. Still very endangered. They don't seem to mind the boats getting fairly close to them.
