The Great Black-backed Gull is the world's largest. You can see it is quite a bit bigger than the Herring Gull next to it, which is also a big gull. They were on the roof of our hotel in Virginia toward evening.
How super to find them together - you really notice the size difference more that way. I've seen herring gulls and thought they were pretty big - until you showed me the other! Are they fairly common?
