someone wrote a letter to the paper saying the water level had risen to the bottom of the new bridge during the storm on 29/30 sept - suggesting therefore that it hadn't been built high enough - which I was reminded of when I saw this mark on the bridge. However, in describing it as "a relatively short overnight rain storm", the writer rather shot his theory in the foot. It was a storm that kept raining torrential rain during the entire morning. Of 194mm of rain that fell in September (at our nearest weather station), 38mm fell on 30th. One fifth of the month's rainfall in one day! I think the river's got a right to rise!!!
