hasty edit - my PC screen started flickering, and of course at first there's no knowing why. Anyway, got an old screen from the cupboard, hoping it was a working spare, not a broken one I'd forgotten to take to the tip ... anyway, it seems to have done the trick. Phew (and crossed fingers).
