Shortly after this I was able to ditch him back in the car because a man asked me if I'd found a phone. I though the best thing I could do was ring his number so had to go back to the car to get my phone.
Hope he found his phone when you rang it. It is awful to lose one's phone. (At least in the old days when they were attached to the wall you always knew where to find it. LOL)
@seacreature forgot to end the story! Yes, I rang his phone - thought we might have to walk around the garden a bit and ring several times - but it rang in his backpack - which I had seen him search twice!
