Get pushed: separate a main subject from its background in a dramatic way

At first I want to crop the couple, but didn't. I think it's better this way :)
And the light fall on the couple, while the girl is on shade / darkness :)
I like both ways. It's a different photo with give couple cropped out. The beam of light on the floor points right to the girl either way. Without the crop it is hard for me to say she is the main subject, but I le the picture that way. What i like most about it are the various kinds of dramatic lines. Nice job!
There is certainly definite separation between the couple and the background, so in that sense you accomplished your goal marvelously.
And, like Francois, I really like how that beam of light leads the eye to the couple.
However, I find that my eye was drawn first to the books and the back wall so the couple is not the main subject.
I think cropping may have put more focus on the couple if that was your intent.
But - I do prefer the whole scene as it is with all the angles and lines.
It's all what you want to accomplish I guess!
