i forgot what it was that i was to paint in watercolour so i went in to my favourites and saw monika's rendition of ivo's old structure from last april and decided right then and there this was it.
i thought that this would be perfect to try on that wet-on-wet technique i learned last week when i painted the butterfly in watercolour. i don't know why i'm such a sucker for punishment but overall i'm happy with the result. there was a tutorial i watched a couple of months ago about simplifying the subject when painting from a photograph, which is to remove the unimportant elements that distracts from the overall picture. this is the result.
the roof was deliberately not included but at some point i will most likely paint this in acrylic and in a bigger canvas, the roof will show much better, i think. what happened to the grass at the bottom, you ask? well, i was about to do that when one of the younger girls at the office called to say she was coming by to drop off something for me that i had to leave the painting and then when i came back i got caught up with other stuff.
@summerfield I like this and for me no grass or roof is fine. The building does not look wrong without them - it could just as easily be a flat roofed building in a city street. The detailing is very nicely done as well.
This is simplified?? I love the details you did keep vikki @summerfield it doesn't look like your typical wet on wet . The bsllustrade looks like it was done in acrylic it's so beautiful layered and detailed
@summerfield I repeat Jackie's question: is this simplified?
YOU HAVE MADE AN ASTONISHING JOB!!!!
You should be really proud. Yes, i understand that the roof and the grass were left out. They do not belong to this painting.
I am amazed at the level of detail you got. Congratulations! You should do more watercolour if you enjoy it.
I keep coming back and staring and oohing and aaawing at this painting.
This is a real delight for the eyes! A good sight to wake up to. Thank you, Vikki.
it was the grunge of the structure that appealed to me when i started to paint. yesterday i felt depressed for some reason and i wanted to get rid of the feeling by pouring my attention on the subject. i would admit that i left out the roof to "simplify" the painting but it looked daunting and you know me, i love the little details but i'm also lazy at the same time; the roof would've just brought me to the brink. after i've finished the railings (which is the best part of the image that i really enjoyed doing), i felt exhausted and you can see the evidence in the steps. 🤣
i figured, with just watching one watercolour tutorial, that wet on wet technique would capture the light on the facade of the building. as i was at the same time working, i needed to 'wet' the top part of the wall quite a few times and the poor paper just about begged to be done with it was severely warped. i should press it between heavy books. not bad for a rookie, eh? thanks, ladies.
@summerfield Not bad for a rookie at all, although I question your definition of the word rookie as well as simplified. It’s an amazing piece of artistry. I love the light and shadows which you have captured so perfectly with paint! I would never have noticed the lack of a roof or grass if you had not mentioned it because the building stands on its own very nicely. Most well done dear friend
@grammyn - rookie is one who knows nothing about what she's doing but kept hitting the right notes either by accident or divine faith. simplified means not doing the hard parts like roofs and grasses. 🤣
@summerfield I so admire this! You really are talented with your variety of mediums you use. This would be a watercolor challenge for me, but you make it look easy. I like the advice of simplifying things in the rendition of a photo. One can get caught up in details. Another inspiration.
