Koutoubia Mosque, Marrakech

Day 71 - As the weather has been rubbish since we got back I've decided to cheer myself up with some of my holiday pictures! This mosque is the tallest in Marrackech and was completed under the reign of the Berber Almohad Caliph Yaqub al-Mansur (1184 to 1199). The minaret (tower) stands 77m (253 ft) high and is designed in an Almohad style. It was constructed of sandstone and was originally covered with Marrakshi pink plaster, but in the 1990s, experts opted to expose the original stone work and tiles by removing the plaster.
I always marvel at how they managed to build such fabulous buildings without modern machinery

@suzanne234 @tonygig @louannwarren @pyrrhula Thank you for your comments 😊 I'd love to have gone inside and had a look around as Moroccan buildings are plain on the out side to hide their inner beauty!
