Day 111 - the Old Scotney Castle (in the front) was built around 1378 by Roger de Ashbunham. Over the next 450 years the castle was live in by 3 different familes - the Ashburnhams, the Darells and the Hussays. In 1830 Edward Huseey III approached the architect Anthony Salvin to build a new house at the top of the hill (seen in the distance to the left of the old castle). Once the new Scotney Castle was built Hussey decided to 'ruin' the Old Castle to create a romantic folly for the garden. The Hussey family were in residence at Scotney until it was left to the National Trust by the last Mr Hussey, in 1970, with the agreement that his wife Elizabeth could reside there until her death, which was in 2006. the National Trust opened it to the public in 2007.
