Atomium! by bigmxx

Atomium!

Day 247 - Day 3 in Brussels. I first saw this structure in1974 on a school trip, the only thing I remembered about it was the fact that the lift went very fast!

It is a landmark building in Brussels, originally constructed for the 1958 Brussels Worlds Fair (Expo 58). It stands 102m (335ft) tall and has nine 18m (60ft) diameter stainless steel clad spheres that are connected, so as a whole it forms the shape of a unit cell of an iron crystal magnified 165 billion times. Inside the connecting tubes there are steps, escalators and a central lift allowing access to five habitable spheres that house exhibit halls and other public spaces.
Cool structure and pov

Amazing that it looks so shiny and nice after 60 years. It would be fun to go inside it.

That looks amazing. I’ve never heard of it so thank you Michelle. I’ve never been to Brussels but I would like to go there sometime.

@4rky Thank you for your comment
@chrisiow Thank you for your comment, it looks so different than the first time I saw it!
@louannwarren Thank you for your comment, the history inside is very interesting, wasn't keen on all the steps!
@ludwigsdiana Thank you for your comment, I wouldn't want to be the cleaner of all those spheres!
@susiemc Thank you for your comment. You should go, it's so easy to get to on the Eurostar - (Ebbsfleet to Brussels 1hr 45 mins) there is so much to see there.

A little bit more about the Atomium - the reason it's so shiny, Renovation started at the beginning of March 2004, it was closed to the public in October, and remained closed until 18 February 2007. In this time all the old dull aluminum panels were removed and replaced with stainless steel at a total cost of €26 million
