Red-legged Seriema

Day 93 - I've been at work today so I've used pictures from my recent visit to Leeds Castle. This strange looking bird is a Red-legged Seriema and originates from Brazil, Uruguay and northern Argentina, it eats mainly snakes insects and seeds. To kill a snake it will pick it up and then throw it hard onto the ground (the one in the picture is plastic!), it prefers running than flying and will run from threats at speeds of up to 15mph, it is good at jumping and sometimes builds it's nest in a tree or bush up to 3M off the ground and will jump into it rather than fly!
have to move quick to stop it swallowing the 'snake'!

@anniesue I think once it threw it on the ground they gave it a treat so he wasn't interested in it anymore
@louannwarren This is the first time I've ever seen/heard of one as Leeds Castle usually only has birds of prey
@chrisiow That's exactly what it done as soon as it was let out it's carrying case it legged it across the arena to it's treat
@momamo It was a rather a comical looking bird
@susiemc It was interesting hearing all about it, in it's native Country they are used as 'guard dogs' protecting property and livestock as it has a very audible screech!
Thank you all for your lovely comments 😊
