Standen House

Day 182 - We visit a National Trust Property today call Standen House, some rather interesting architecture but not one of my favourite houses that I've visited.
The estate was formed from three farms which the Beale family purchased in 1890, one of these farm houses was kept (top left) and made into the servants quarters, which was joined to the main house. Between 1891 and 1894 the architect Philip Webb, designed the house for a London Solicitor James Beale as a holiday home for his wife Margaret, and their seven children. The house is constructed in the Wealden vernacular style with sandstone quarried from the estate and locally made bricks and tiles. The interior is decorated with Morris carpets, fabrics and wallpapers, with furnishings also by Morris. From the beginning the house had electric power, originally generated by a donkey engine in a shed and still has its original electric light fittings.
An interesting set of images.
