So today we were walking through Old Glenora in West Edmonton. Government House is located here. This was built as the official residence for the Lt Governor. It opened in 1913 and was used until 1938 when during a dispute between the Premier and the Lt Governor over his refusal to sign three pieces of legislation into law the government turned off the power and cut the telephone lines forcing the family to move out.
It remained empty for the next four years. From 1942 to 1964 it found several different uses. The Government had sold the building and purchased it again in the early 1970's. After spending $1.7 million on renovations it was reopened in 1976.
Today the government uses it for meetings and both private and public functions. On the weekends they offer free tours.
Today when we arrived they were going to give the last tour of the day. We happened to be the only two people there so it was like getting a private tour of this wonderful building.
So I have decided that this week I will take you on a tour. I trust you will join me
Interesting photo and history behind the old building. Thanks. Great! Looking forward to the tour. It is definitely something we'd like to do next time we are in Edmonton. Will give my cousins there a heads on on one place they can take us to when they ask, "What would you like to do today?" Been to West Ed. Mall several times!
Thanks for your nice comment on my Pollock Bench photo. I haven't made this run for 3 years so it is kinda a "benchmark" of my fitness. Once one gets up the long incline to the top, the trail follows the rock around the rim for about 3 miles, then goes cross country a bit to join the up trail for descent. It's a magical part of the country and only 3 1/2 hours from Denver. http://www.coloradowestoutdoors.com/home/hiking/black-ridge-wilderness/pollock-bench/
