Clinker Brick House by bkbinthecity

Clinker Brick House

Today I made a stop on the way to work to get a couple of pictures. This is an example of a clinker brick bungalow.
Edmonton has a history of brickyards. In the early days of the cities history there were several different brickyards located in the river valley. As a result of this there are a number of clinker brick houses in the older neighbourhoods in the city.
Well my busy week came to an end now it is time to just rest and relax and enjoy the weekend. Have a good one everyone
Nice capture. Now I will have to find out why it is called a clinker brick house.

We have clinker bricks as decorative bricks on the corners. It was interesting to find out what clinker is!

Lovely photo. I'm interested in why its called a bungalow? In Australia this is the kind of house we are used to and we just refer to them as either single or double storey houses.

@grannysue Clinker Bricks are just pieces of bricks that were broken and over done in the oven so that they are considered no good. They were just scrape pieces that in the early 1900's started being used on houses in this manner
June 16th, 2013
@maggiemae I think they are built in many places around the world
June 16th, 2013
@jetpics Not quite sure where the word originated but here it simply refers to a small two or three bedroom house. Usually with the main floor and a basement

@tstb Clinker Brick is just broken pieces of bricks that got tossed into a scrape pile. They used to be thrown out until someone came up with the idea of using them on houses like this one

@kimshots Thanks Kim
June 16th, 2013
@olivetreeann The term clinker is in reference to the clinking sound that the broken pieces would make as they were tossed into a scrape pile
