The other day while walking along Whyte Avenue I decided to stop and take a picture of the Strathcona Public Building. This was once home to the South Side Post Office. The clock tower has a clock that was shipped over here from Derby , England in 1913. The Post Office moved out in 1976 and the building sat empty for ten years. Today the building is home to a lovely restaurant on the main floor and a Billiard Room on the upper floor. Over all of these years, even when the building was vacant, the clock has been kept running and is a wonderful landmark in our city
@sharonthompson Thanks Sharon. I am not sure but maybe because the post office is such a central landmark in a community it seems like a natural spot to put a clock
@kimshots This is one section of the city that they have kept so much history around. I think that is part of why it is such a popular spot in the city
@scooter Glad to share this one with you. If you want to see a better shot of the actual clock you can go back to my second or third shot I did back in may or June of 2011
Interesting architectural capture. I am so happy to hear that the building is no longer vacant. Great testimony that the clock remains working for the duration.
looks warm
