Changing Cityscape by bkbinthecity

Changing Cityscape

A part of the heart of downtown Edmonton has been drastically altered. The Kelly Building which once was home to the Ramsey Department Store is no longer standing. This building along with two other historical buildings have been torn down to make room for a new office tower.
The photo on the left shows the building in better days. The middle shot shows part of the demolition that took place. Before they totally brought the building down they did preserve some of the bricks to be used in part of the design of the new building. The far right is a shot I took showing the construction that is now taking place where this once magnificent building once stood. Yes the cityscape of Edmonton is most definitely changing
It is always sad to see the history of a city being destroyed.

Wow. Great comparison shots. It's always sad to see a building torn down to be replaced with something modern. They should restore the old buildings to leave part of the history in the city. Nice triptych.

Another great triptych and so sad when buildings are removed.

Awesome shots

Interesting triptych, Brian. Always sad to see a little bit of history disappear. Terrific that you were thoughtful enough to record the changes.

Nice that they are preserving some of the bricks to reuse. I have seen in some places where they gut the old building and keep the old facade then build a completely new building inside the old walls. The first few floors look like the old building and then a modern sky scraper grows out of it.

A super series as ever.

I think I remember a post you did sometime ago on this old building. Well, the new building is rather nice and will be modern and efficient. Probably some older buildings allowed to remain somewhere else in the city!

It's true that you cannot stop change but a great pity to see buildings that made history for a particular place like this raised to the ground. great triptych. Thanks for sharing

Really nice collage to show the changes. It is too bad they couldn't restore the original building, and maintain the old character.
September 10th, 2014
I suppose that's progress. Well captured in this collage

Great series, but sad loss of the beautiful building. The new one doesn't seem to have much character. They are renovating a lot of buildings here, but they're getting good at keeping the facades and developing the insides.

Nice collage, but it's always a shame to see these things go - Lucy
September 10th, 2014
So sad when progress happens in this way!
September 10th, 2014
What a pretty old building. :-(
September 10th, 2014
Lovely collage and a great looking building.
September 10th, 2014
Nice collage :)
September 10th, 2014
Nice story in these photos, Brian, but sad too. I hate to see these old and the historic buildings ripped apart for another high rise.... Progress isn't always "progress".

Great collage. That`s what they call: future
The place/street/house I`ve been born is now an eight line traffic highway road.

It is sad that the council could not save the building bkb, sure they could have found a vacant plot. well presented. fav.
September 10th, 2014
Nice collage showing the change
September 11th, 2014
Sad- but it must have been more cost effective this way. Money always seems to be the bottom line. Great collage showing the progression.
September 11th, 2014
It makes me sad! I love the old buildings and think they are much prettier.
September 11th, 2014
@allie912 Very sad indeed Allison
September 11th, 2014
@prttblues Thanks Bev. I totally agree with you and in this case we lost three buildings that could have been used for something
September 11th, 2014
@onewing Very sad indeed Babs
September 11th, 2014
@kerristephens Thanks Kerri
September 11th, 2014
@cathieg As hard as it is for me to see buildings come down I do think it is important to take pictures of all of this
September 11th, 2014
@mcrt They have done that here as well
September 11th, 2014
@thresheg Thanks Graham
September 11th, 2014
@maggiemae The new building is not built yet. The far right shot is the area where the construction is taking place. The first two photos were ones that I posted earlier in my project
September 11th, 2014
@sangwann you're welcome Dione
September 11th, 2014
@linah I think they could have but most of the developers here are more interested in just building tall skyscrapers
September 11th, 2014
@deliad Thanks Delia
September 11th, 2014
@alia_801 The new one is not built yet. The photo on the far right shows the area where it will be built
September 11th, 2014
@fishers Lucy it is very sad to see them go
September 11th, 2014
@ribbet9 Very sad indeed Candace
September 11th, 2014
@danette Well it was :(
September 11th, 2014
@mittens Well it was a nice building :(
September 11th, 2014
@carys Thank you
September 11th, 2014
@aglennc You are so right about that Anita
September 11th, 2014
@pyrrhula Yes the future can be very different
September 11th, 2014
@dannydavies I am sure they could have but I think that our council lacks some initiative at times
September 11th, 2014
@hjbenson Thanks Harry
September 11th, 2014
@olivetreeann Thanks Ann I do think we have to many developers that are more interested in modern skyscrapers than preserving history
September 11th, 2014
@harbie They have so much more character to them
September 11th, 2014
Progress? Glad you were able to capture these shots!!!
September 12th, 2014
@eyesmile As sad as am I am glad I have these shots
September 13th, 2014
Wow progress is sometimes heartfelt. Too bad they couldn't have restored the old building it had character and would have been a wonderful contrast of new and old in the city.
September 13th, 2014
@cathrinemitch It was very sad to see this hppen
September 14th, 2014
It's good to have this record. Personally I am sad when i see nice old buildings being torn down to make way for new ones which I usually don't find nearly as attractive. There's something so cold about so much modern architecture.
September 15th, 2014
@tristansmum You are so right about that Stephanie. The new ones lack the character the old ones had
