This is my second week for my series on Things That Canada is Known For. If this is the first you have had a look at this series I would love to know what you think about when you think of Canada.
Today my post is about the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.
They had their beginning on May 23, 1873 as the North West Mounted Police. They were formed to help bring law and order to western prairie provinces as they were being settled.
In 1904 they became known as the Royal North West Mounted Police.
In 1920 they merged with the Dominion Police Force, Canada's first federal police force which was formed in 1868.
From this point they became known as the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.
They are best known for their dress uniforms.
Here are a couple of post cards I have featuring this uniform.
Several of you in your comments mentioned the RCMP. This post is for Lou Ann @louannwarren
Beverley @beverley365 Boxplayer @boxplayer
Margaret Brown @craftymeg and Valerie Chesney @happysnaps
So iconic possible the first thing people would name when asked about Canada Brian, we have some glass-wear from the Mounted Police Trading Post in Niagara falls:)
Two lovely postcards! I have vague memories of a tv series that I used to watch, about the Mounties, probably 1960s, but I can't remember it's name at the moment.
@365projectorgheatherb Thanks Heather for the comment and the fav. The one post card I purchased many years ago. The vintage one was sent to me from someone in Quebec
I used to so like watching movies of the Mounted Police.
