Been an interesting few hours this afternoon. After finding the chapel, I wanted to see the former mental hospital. I'd read about this place awhile ago. The plan is to build it into flats, and many many new homes have already been built on the land behind this building.
It was first opened on 8 October, 1888 as the West Riding Pauper Lunatic Asylum, and was closed in June 2003. The hospital once contained a library, a surgery, a dispensary, butcher's, dairies, baker's, a sweetshop, an upholster's, a cobbler's, spacious grounds, a ballroom and a railway that ran to the chapel. In its final years of operation, High Royds had been become outdated and unsuited to modern psychiatric practice... gulp!!
fab looking place... was a closed down victorian metal institute near where I grew up... me and my mates use to love playing in the grounds and often accidently getting inside then scaring ourselves sh*tless wandering about...
this is a great shot - there are loads of really fantastic buildings up North that were turned into Mental Homes - most I guess are now hotels or as this one is about to be homes! Nice place to live!
