I'm not up on snake species....all I've ever seen around here are garter snakes and I can't tell you the last time I saw one of those. I googled it and far as I can tell it's a Brown Snake. It was very small and appeared to be dead...until I nudged it gently with my foot and he hissed at me. He was really little so I hope he survives the winter. Don't you just love how he looks like he has eyelashes?? :)
This is just wonderful! If it's been getting colder, he was likely going into hibernation...and you know how much we *like* being awakened again when we're going to sleep! I've read that brown snakes are good snakes and eat other bothersome things, so let's wish him a "good night" until springtime!
