And then it got worse! I woke to a light covering of snow. Initially the motorway flowed well, then suddenly the police were diverting all the lorries to one side and creating a huge stack, while cars managed to creep in the outside lane. Then it all stopped, luckily I managed to get off the motorway. Just as well, the motorway south was closed most of the way from Lyon to Montpellier. So a very slow drive south and everytime I got anywhere near a motorway entrance/exit there was chaos and long tailbacks. At 4.30 pm and still nearly an hour from my intended campsite and now driving on roads that had been cleared by snow ploughs the coastal road was flooded and rather than drive through I turned around, and pulled into the first hotel I came across. When I asked about a restaurant I was told to come back at 6.30 and they would phone around to see if anywhere was open, (yesterday only one opened). So it looks like a beer and emergency rations from the campervan tonight. While here the wind has picked up an is blowing the palm tree outside my room all over the place and reception are worried about the running water they can here. Not even sure if I will be able to move on tomorrow! So much for my drive to the sun.
I feel your pain. We travelled by train today from Lyon to Perpignan, changing at Montpellier. Montpellier was a mess, worse than lyon with deep snow - people had slept in the station. South of Lyon we saw trucks stacked up on the autoroute. We are now home S of Perpignan and though it is foggy and wet, there are no traffic problems. Things started to get better after Sete, so that's your target! Bonnes Vacances!
