The bridge, built according to the plans of János Feketeházy, was inaugurated on 28 September 1895. It was damaged in both world wars and blown up on 26 December 1944. For 57 years afterwards, only two bridge stumps stood on either bank of the river. The renovated bridge was inaugurated on 11 October 2001.
The 20th anniversary of the opening of this bridge was celebrated jointly by the people of Esztergom and Párkány. The ceremony was attended by the Prime Ministers of both countries.
In the evening the bridge was illuminated with the national colours of the two countries.
