Gasholders from the Regent's Canal by boxplayer

Gasholders from the Regent's Canal

On an 8-mile walk between Hackney Central and Walthamstow - my training walk today.

Looked a bit damp and miserable to start with and in fact we got quite a heavy shower as I was breakfasting. But I headed out to the tube anyway on my way to Hackney Central - a few spitty showers but nothing ever amounted to much thank goodness.

A walk along 3 canals and 2 marshes - Regent's Canal, Hertford Union Canal, the Lee Navigation - Hackney Marshes and Walthamstow Marshes.

Got out at Hackney Central and strolled through London Fields where they've planted a gorgeous wildflower meadow, full of poppies and cornflowers. Walked through a quiet Broadway Market then onto the Regent's Canal.

This was immediately quite striking with the gasholders looming over the grafitti-strewn towpath. And lots of interesting houseboats. Soon this was alongside Victoria Park and the walk passed through this for a bit.

Not a park I'm very familiar with, but it looked impressive - a big lake, full of waterbirds and a cafe at one end. The Hertford Union Canal was more of the same, interesting houseboats, graffiti and street art, the odd lock and an interesting garden centre, Growing Concerns.

Arrived at the Olympic Park and enjoyed the view to the stadium and the Copper Box, remembering the happy Olympic days out we had in 2012. Then it was north along the Lee Navigation along more familiar territory.

Stopped at Mother, a plant-based cafe just by Here East for a smoothie with coconut, berries and bananas - had it on a bench by the water in the lovely warm sunshine.

Walked north across Hackney Marshes - all the footballers had gone, but there were 2 cricket matches going on. Then wended my way past the filter beds, crossing Lea Bridge Road onto Walthamstow Marshes. The route took the upper path away from the water past the big pylon.

Turned onto Coppermill Lane and walked up towards St James St, popping into a random art trail exhibit on the way. Turned towards the station to look at Crate, our new containerised street food emporium. Pizzas, burgers, veggie burgers, an 'Untraditional' pub and lots of other outlets still to be filled.

Called Dave and he fancied coming along so I grabbed a beer and a spot at a table to wait for him. Had to get my shirt out as it had got quite windy and felt decidedly cool.

When Dave arrived, got a bit more beer from the Untraditional Pub and both of us got meaty burgers from the Vegan Grill - in an odd black charcoal bun. But was very nice, and the chips were delightfully sprinkled with paprika. Very hipsterish all around us - no cash payments in sight.

Walked back home then, catching sight of a painted lady butterfly. Did a smidgeon of useful stuff, finding the towels and bed linen for next week and clearing all the random shit off my coat hook.

Then a couple of hours finally catching up with my photo backlog. Why am I always catching up?
