I had mixed feelings about taking this photo.
Taken yesterday - but will have to do for today's Street shot. This woman and her son heading into Good Friday service. The church is a local, small very traditional/ old school Catholic.
I was intrigued by the mantilla. I stood in the doorway for a short time and listened.. (thought this was ok.. being a lapsed catholic!) and noticed that many of the women in the congregation were also wearing mantilla.
when i was still a young person back in my old country, i went to church wearing a veil all the time, there's no if's or but's, gotta wear them. as young kids we wore the shorter ones, reaching down to the shoulders and had to be light-coloured. only grown ups get to wear black or other colours. if i was with my mother and i forgot to bring my veil, i would use my mother's fancy handkerchief, she always had one in her purse. i believe i still have one back in the family home. nice street shot.
@summerfield Hi! that so interesting! Where are you from? I remember when i was growing up - that people got dressed up for church and other such events.. even going to the city for shopping. I think they are very beautiful and have a sombre elegance.
@brigette - i grew up in manila. yes, growing up, we put on our sunday best when going to church. that would be different from the clothes you wear to school or to the office. rugged casual was for going to the wet market. i shudder when people at the office wear shabby clothes, something i would not even dream of wearing when i go grocery shopping. but i've been told times are different now. thank you, brigette.
