Do you find that the trail maps are accurate? When my boys did the hiking merit badge for Boy Scouts, the biggest thing they learned is that most parks had terrible maps of their trails. They did a 10-mile hike at a state park once that ended up being over 15 for the boys and 22 for my husband and another leader who went back for the truck.
