Blackbird

Here's a strange little chap, he spent the afternoon showing off in our garden.

Pic one (top left) he spent ages doing this, sitting there with his mouth wide open.

Pic two (bottom left) he then started showing his wings

Pic three (main one) he then moved down to the grass and spread his wings out, catching the sun on his back.

My question is, why did he do this?

What leaps to my mind is they're not called birdbrains for no reason, but that might be considered a mean remark! Great captures!

Well I'm no bird behaviour expert but I have two theories...
1-he saw Professor Yaffle in Bagpuss and decided that was how to behave (these shots look just like him)
2-He saw you doing it and copied your sunbathing etc?
He looks happy, anyway! :)

I think he was a young bird and was trying to cool himself. I think you should provide some water for him, poor little thing.

I think he was a young bird looking for mum or dad to feed him - great shots

I think fledgelings are usually brown and speckled so this one is probably a fully grown male but blackbirds do like to sun themselves. They also like to splash in a birdbath to clean their feathers so he was probably hoping that you would put some water out for him. Great captures
