Having had a few problems when turning acrylic, I took some time to read up and the advice was, use the highest speed possible and make sure your tools are sharp.
Taking this advice, I proceeded to the shed, sharpened my chisel and cranked the speed up on the lathe.
What I found out about this technique is that when the chisel does snag, it does it in a spectacular way, sending the pot across the shed at a speed matching the speed of the lathe and with such a force that it snaps the cast iron tool rest.
