Why is it so hard to find a well, I was hoping to get a shot looking down a well but this is the only one in the area and not only does it have a fine grid, the water level is at floor level (see the overflow pond behind.
So I stood at the top of the stairs and looked down at it.
This is St Osyth's Well in Bierton, Buckinghamshire.
Just beside St James Church is St Osyth's Well - a holy well that has recently been restored by the villagers.
A booklet written in 1956 by Wilfrid Steer says: "We do not know how old it is but it is older than it looks. It is called St Osyth's Well, but again we do not know when or why it was so called. Whether or not it is a holy well we do not know but there is no reason to suppose that it is not." - So that;s no bloody help at all then, thanks Wilfid!

It's not always possible to find the image we dream of-- but this one suffices--looking down from the top of the steps to the well In spite of the shot being somewhat less dramatic perhaps than a shot looking down into a well
Health and safety for you! We used to have a well in our garden covered by a piece of MDF and a bit of earth. I found it one day whilst digging! Yikes, it was deep! This is a nice composition on a sunny day :)
I like the symmetry in this shot, with the step rails and the well walls. If the water is at floor level, is it a well? But anyway, the sun shone on your photograph so all was well, if you'll pardon the pun.
Good shot of this well. The wells around here are marked with a metal lid or such and are not too photographic. At least, this well has a lovely brick wall.
Love the official description!! LOL! There is an extremely deep Roman well just inside the entrance to Colchester castle, it had a grid over it for security and Lucy @lucypics and her siblings used to smuggle pebbles into the castle in their pockets for the (strictly forbidden) thrill of dropping them into the well and counting the seconds until they heard the plop! How many seconds was it Lucy?! Nice shot Bulldog which brought back happy memories!
