The first thing we learned was to use the Programme setting and to set the exposure one third of a stop below the normal setting. We also set the white balance to cloudy and then took two photos of everything - one on P and one on auto. Reviewing the photos later showed us the difference it made. This is my attempt to throw the background out of focus. However, I've since learned that my camera is not designed to do that so I will have limited success.
