Canfranc station 2 by busylady

Canfranc station 2

The station at Canfranc on the Spanish/French border has been largely abandoned with only the main building now being used for just two passsenger trains a day and the occasional freight train. It was a once a large border crossing handling large numbers of passengers who had to transfer themselves and their belongings to and from the trains between France and Spain because of a difference in the gauge sizes. There are now many rusting carriages and abandoned railway sheds and platforms slowly falling apart. The station was opened in July 1928 but closed in 1970 after a bridge on the French side was demolished. The SNCF decided not to repair the bridge as it was too costly. We weren't able to take a tour but as the station was open we decided to take a look around at the sad remains of this once grand station.
This impressive station must have been quite impressive in its day. Just look at the outside facade it's built for show& status. A very sad sight.

A great collage of sadly deteriorating railway history-I'm sure it would have been magnificent in its day. Thanks for posting.

Super collage. This is the sort of place that would be heaven for David. Even though it has been abandoned it has such interest.
