Nice attempt. Have you taken many moon shots? I can give you some setting to start with. The moon is one of the hardest object to photograph since it is so bright and moving so fast.
@cirasj thanks! No, I haven't Joe. That would be great.
I tried various settings (just played around with shutter speed and then ended up trying some on auto as well). I also didn't have a tripod with me, which I know would be helpful
@caitnessa Set your camera on a tripod and turn the VR off (Image stabilization on a Canon) because your camera will try to adjust for movement. Strange, I know. If you do not have a tripod, do not worry, try to brace yourself to cut down on camera movement. Use the biggest lens you have. Set your camera to spot metering. Start with the "Loony 11" rule in manual mode. The Loony-11 rule says to set the aperture at f/11, shutter speed to 1/100 and ISO to 100. When I take my moon shots, I start with an aperture of f/11, shutter speed of 1/250 and ISO 200 most of the time. Once I do that, I look at the exposure of the photo to see if I must increase or decrease my shutter speeds. I have been practicing moon photos for a while so feel free to ask me any questions you may have.
